June 7The “Elon Moreh seed group” goes onto the land for the first time at the old train station in Sebastia. It is the first attempt to establish a settlement in a crowded Arab area in the heart of the West Bank and is contrary to the Alon Plan’s guidelines for settlement in the territories.
November 22The UN General Assembly recognizes the right of the Palestinians to self-determination and grants the PLO permanent observer status in all UN institutions. Strikes and demonstrations break out throughout the Occupied Territories. Israel sets up checkpoints and sends in large numbers of troops to prevent Palestinians from assembling.
Thirty-two percent of Palestinian labor force is employed in Israel.
