April 20

The settlement of Ofra is founded under the guise of a work camp for the fencing work being done at a nearby army base.

August 15

Under pressure from settlers in Hebron, the worshiping arrangements are changed at the Cave of the Patriarchs/Ibrahimi Mosque. Palestinians in the West Bank demonstrate in response.

September 21

The settlement of Maale Adumim is founded. It will later be declared the first city in the Occupied Territories and will remain the largest settlement in the West Bank until 2004.

November 10

The UN General Assembly adopts a resolution classifying Zionism as a form of racism.

December 1

After a number of failed attempts, Gush Emunim settlers (the Elon Moreh seed group) obtain government approval to remain in the West Bank. Following a compromise, they move to the Qedum army base and two years later establish the settlement Qedumim.
